Tavern Off the Green appears to be nearing its debut at Cumming City Center. At its Aug. 18 meeting, Cumming City Council approved an alcohol license for the restaurant, located at 400 Vision Drive. The applicant told council the expected opening timeline is around college football season, and the restaurant’s own website currently lists it as “Coming Soon.” The approval is another sign of continued tenant momentum at City Center, which has been steadily building out its restaurant, retail and entertainment mix. Tavern Off the Green is positioned as a social dining spot, and its timing around football season could make it a visible addition to the city’s gathering-place district.

Cumming City Council voted Aug. 18 to approve a resolution supporting the Cottages of Providence housing development, an affordable/supportive housing effort connected to St. Vincent de Paul. City officials described the resolution as an initial consent step that allows the organization to pursue grant funding, rather than a final binding development agreement with the city. That distinction matters: the project is not fully approved in final form, but it now has enough municipal support to keep moving through the funding process. Affordable housing has become a bigger issue across fast-growing Forsyth County, where rising land values and housing costs continue to shape who can live near jobs, services and schools. The Cottages of Providence item is worth watching as it moves from grant pursuit toward any future city agreements or site-specific approvals.

Cumming has begun the process of updating its comprehensive plan, the long-range policy document that helps guide future growth and development decisions. Public hearings were held before both the Planning Commission and City Council on Aug. 18 for the 2027 Comprehensive Plan update. The plan is expected to cover major local issues including population growth, housing, economic development, land use, community facilities, public safety, transportation and broadband. The city is required to adopt the update by Oct. 1, 2027, but the process starting now gives residents, officials and property owners a long runway to shape priorities. For a city seeing steady pressure from development, annexation, infrastructure needs and commercial growth, the comprehensive plan will become one of the key reference points for future rezoning and investment decisions.
